Ladybugs and Wildflowers

I am so inspired by the fall flora lately. I went out today and took some pictures of wildflowers and other nature. I love getting up close with my macro lens and really getting "into" nature.

Beauty in Rust

Out and about one day I came across this old garage with rusted out truck parked. As well as an old pile of chairs. I lowered the saturation of the color. I love the combination of rusty and desaturated tones.

Up in the Sky

The sky was a really intense blue the other day and I could't pass up the opportunity to snap a few photographs. I love the vibrant intensity of the blue in the sky against against the clouds.

In Summer of 2008 I went with my college: Kendall College of Art and Design to Europe. I studied European Art History from the 18 and 19 centuries. I also toured London, Paris, Bruge, Belgium, Antwerp, and Amsterdam. Here are just some of the interesting photos I captured and edited. It was an amazing trip, one that gave me great experiences and wonderful memories.

Merging the Layers

Merging the Layers is a collection of photographs that I manipulated in order to create a sense of depth, to bring together varying elements into one image. This process enables me to evoke an emotional response and to create a dreamlike perspective. I do this in order to elicit many different feelings, concepts and/or memories. I find that this method allows me to convey numerous pieces of information in a single image.

The photographs take on a mixture of real and imaginary impressions. I add to the surrealistic impact of my photographs by implementing varying exposures, layering of alternate perspectives, and augmenting a range of color schemes. By forcing the viewer to shift perspectives within the representation, the photographs take on a sense of movement lending to the depth of field. This enhances the surrealistic illusion of the final piece. Because ones perspective is such a subjective truth, this flattening technique lends itself easily to expressing many views at one time.

Sense of Place

Sense of Place
Jersey Junction-Ice Cream Parlor

A concentration on place. Effectively representing a place's feeling, atmosphere and mood.

Artist Statement

Sense of Place

The term sense of place has been defined and utilized in different ways by different people. To some, it is the characteristics that some geographic places have and some do not. To others it is a feeling or perception held by people and not by the place itself. It is this sense of place that communicates characteristics that make a place special or unique, evoking feelings of authentic human attachment and belonging.

The location that I chose to place my focus on is the ice cream parlor, Jersey Junction, in East Grand Rapids’ Gaslight Village. For the past five decades, this sweet gem has been treating customers to some of the tastiest ice creams and desserts. As the story goes, the building's unique design, resembling an old-fashioned railroad station inspired the name. Renovated to look much as it did when it opened in October of 1963, the old-fashioned parlor and candy store features display cabinets and shelves packed with children’s favorite candies. The 28-flavor selection has some ice creams that are unique to the ice cream parlor and they are especially known for their old-fashioned waffle cones. Jersey Junction has a true sense of place. A part of its appeal is that to enter is to step back in time and place.
